President Buhari urged to prevent workers’ strike by implementing minimum wage

President Buhari inaugurates APC Women and Youth Campaign Team at the State House on 3rd Dec 2019-5
Issa Aremu, a governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Kwara State, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prevent Tuesday, January 8, planned industrial action by the organized labour over the non-implementation of the N30, 000 minimum wage.
Aremu asked Buhari to prevent the protest by wasting no time in submitting to the National Assembly an executive bill on the minimum wage.
The politician, who stated this during a meeting with market women and artisans ahead of this year’s election, also said the planned strike by the workers would be averted if the National Assembly acted fast and appropriately on the bill to ensure that the N30, 000 minimum wage receives the force of law.
He advised Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, to act like a statesman on the matter as he said his (Saraki’s) father did in the Second Republic
Aremu, who is a former national deputy chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), asked the Federal Government not to bother about the position of the state governors, saying the workers would take up the matter against them
He stated: “The strike is preventable if the president acts fast. I know his love for the poor especially the market women. He should promptly send the executive Bill to the National Assembly. He should leave us with some state governors, who are unwilling to pay the wage.
“We will make their states ungovernable because they are going against the spirit and the letter of the Nigerian Constitution on Minimum Wage.
“It is in the Exclusive List so those concerned governors should not truncate it. Bukola Saraki’s father, Dr Olusola Saraki, who as the Senate Leader in 1981 ensured the passage of the first ever minimum wage increments in the history of Nigeria. The Senate President should follow suit via express approval of the Bill. It is one of the ways to test his statesmanship.”
